We had a hard time contacting some people here in FL with all the down power. The quiet time really made it strike home how great it is to have our group camaraderie.

With that in mind, I'm pleased to announce the formation of our new hairdressers chatroom. You need Hotcomm software. It's not free, but it's nice because we'll have audio capability plus the opportunities to do regular online seminars with live PowerPoint presentations from top Regis hairdressers around the globe.

My webmaster, Toni_UK, is still working her fingers to the bone setting everything up, but please write down the future room address and keep it in a safe place:

relay9:regissalons

In the future, we're planning on opening up additional rooms to accomodate the hairdressing novices, our Spanish speaking hairdressers, plus an exclusive room for our innovative auto-hairdressingmaven software program.

Plus much much much more to come! She's an actual Seminole Indian right here in Florida, and you can see she crafted them with an Indian motif.

For all the attendees of the first HAL, watch your mailboxes because we've sent you a present. You'll each be receiving a pair of Susan's wonderful slings. Originally she had designed a Shamu sling which had the famous orca whale on it. She wanted to make a keepsake memento of our time in Orlando, and I actually saw her first prototypes. They were really special. However my lawyers checked it out and we were not going to get permission from Sea World to have Shamu's image on the sling, even though it was just for a limited number of "gifts" and not for a commercial purpose. They were willing to negotiate a licensing fee with us, but we weren't interested in making such a simple gesture into such a big and costly legal thing. Really now, how silly.

Enjoy the gifts everyone!

Bad hair life

Like many of you I watched Live 8. I really felt old because like your stereotypical old person, I didn't know or like 90% of the musical (and I use that term lightly) acts performing.

Anyway, let's talk about one guy I did recognize. You know him. He's been all over the news for years now, talking with world leaders and really being a big shot. He's Bono of U2.

Now I remember Bono from the original Live Aid days. He and U2 were relative newcomers back then. They were one of the groups that old people didn't know or like much back then. I didn't care one way or the other about their sounds. The thing that struck me about Bono back then was the mullet.
That was an amazingly hideous hairstyle. Something Michael Bolton spent years futilely trying to emulate.

Twenty some odd years on and Bono is still in deep hair trouble.

Sometimes I see Bono and he's got the Joan of Arc, Buster Brown thing going. That's his "dry" look. Other times I see him, he's got the "wet" look. It's a bit based on the old defunct Pat Riley showtime look of over a decade ago, except instead of Riley's helmet hair gel, Bono is into oil. Maybe some red wine vinegar too. It's a real unappealing scuzzy look. I could smell him throught the screen. I want to wring his hair to dress my salads.

Please call me Bono. Let's fix this hair thing.

Too funny

Maybe you need to be a hair professional to fully appreciate this. A reader (and famed hairdresser in her own right) who lives in England has written me to propose a London Hair-A-Long. How amazing is that?

Dear Sandy Beach,

My name is Aki Watanabe. I am a native of Tokyo, Japan but have lived in Great Britain for the past 35 years. I have studied and worked here as a professional hairdresser for over 25 years now. Your successful Orlando Hair-A-Long has inspired me to try and put together a similar event here in London later this year. I know you are in the planning stages of your next HAL. Have you considered London?

As I'm sure you know, we have quite the avant-garde re-revolution happening here in hairstyle, and London is right in the center of it. I think it would be exciting to have a venue for cross cultural sharing of ideas. We all have a lot to learn and teach each other.

Please contact me if interested.
Regards,

Aki Watanabe
tel xxxx xxxxxxx
Brookmount House
62-65 Chandos Place
Covent Garden, London WC2N 4LP

Wow, what an honor it is to have such an offer from such an esteemed hairdresser as yourself, Aki Watanabe. I'm simply stunned. You can bet the HAL Council will be taking this proposal up immediately. It really burns me up. So let me address this topic today.

The topic is Black Hair.

Dear Ms Sandy Beach,

I am an aspiring young hairdresser, and I was planning to go to your HAL in Orlando last week. However, I was one of the last minute cancellations. My boyfriend said white people don't know about black hair, and that as a Black woman, I have to go to a school that specializes in black hair run by Black people.

I thought that was crazy. I mean hair is hair, right? So anyway, he was putting a lot of pressure on me not to go so I didn't. Then you show all your photos of the HAL and my boyfriend was like see what did I tell you? Only white people there for white people hair.

You were so happy to see some men attending your HAL, but I did feel funny in not seeing any people of color. Am I wrong? Is hair not hair. Do I have to go to some specialized black hair institute?

-M

M, thank you for writing me. I really wish you were there in Orlando. I'm going to send you the video we made of the presentations and the booklet as my gift. You'll see (and be sure to show your boyfriend too) that indeed "hair is hair."

I know the science of hair. I've studied in the history of hair. Does your boyfriend know the chemistry of hair. I think not. So tell him to stop being glib.

I've done the hair for Oprah, Tyra Banks, Beyonce, Cecily Tyson, Dionne Warwick, Don King, Janet and Latoya Jackson, Robin Givens and Emmanuel Lewis.

Black hair is a color, just like strawberry blonde and summer divine. That's all. Tell your boyfriend I've taken a hot flatiron to the toughest kinks in the world and come out on top. I'm the best of hair. Any style. Yes, any color.

These ignorant stereotypes of hair really outrage me. I don't know why white people insist only on white hairdressers and black people insist only on black hairdressers, yet we can all go to the Orientals for manicures and pedicures without batting an eyelash.

Let's wake up, people!

Dear Bernice...

I received the following letter after the conclusion of the Orlando HAL. It contains some very important questions, so I will answer them publically here.

My goodness! It looks like you gals had a great time at the first ever HAL. Congratulations!

Firstly, I would love to attend the 2nd HAL. My vote is for Ontario. It's beautiful here in the summer. I am very old and very poor, so a local location would be right up my alley.

Secondly, I am having concerns of your purpose in holding these Hair-A-Longs. More precisely, Papa Jimsy has concerns. He thinks you must be a crook making a big profit off suckers like me who want to attend. Tell me this isn't true.

Thirdly, I am an aspiring hair stylist. I have been accepted to the Ricky007 University of Metrosexual Hairdressing in California. Are you familiar with this school. Is it reputable. Is it Regis certified.

I asked another Regis hairdresser, Cathy_FL. She never bothered to answer me. Do you know Cathy? I hope you are nicer than her. Thank you.

Bernice

Bernice, thank you for your kind words. Let me address your questions in the order presented.

(1) I have to admit the HAL Council has not yet reconvened, and preparations for the next Hair-A-Long are stuck on the ground floor. Rest assured we shall start moving on it soon. Not everyone is from my area, so we are working first on a way to meet "online" in some sort of chatroom. I'm ashamed to say that I'm the least computer savvy of the group, so I'm letting others handle all that. For sure, one of the first matters we'll be deciding is the where and when questions for the next HAL.

(2) You are not the first person to wonder and ask me about the money, Bernice. This did come up at the HAL in Orlando, and I believe I addressed everything to everyone's satisfaction. First of all, let me state for the record, that I absolutely, positively, categorically am not profitting one cent from the HALs.

I am a professional hairdresser, and that's how I make my living. I don't need to run conventions to fill my pocket. On the contrary, the HALs seem to be money losers. As every attendee will attest to, you do get a lot of bang for your buck when you come to a Hair-A-Long. I am not handing out homemade sandwiches or letting people sleep on my foldout sofabeds in my house. In full disclosure, I did get corporate sponsorship to help foot the bill. RegisCorp was very generous and had a huge banner and full page ad in the HAL booklet. Wally's World of Wigs was also a very generous sponsor. The same goes for Paul Mitchell Hair Products, Outback Steakhouse, Wet 'n Wild park, Southwest Air, JetBlue Air, Hyundai, Princess Cruise Line and other companies large and small that went way beyond the call of duty in accomodating us.

Any leftover money went to the Make-A-Wig Foundation which helps prematurely balding men in their late 20's obtain low-cost and free toupees and wigs. MAW is a reputable, nationally known not-for-profit charity, and we're proud to be associated with them.

(3) I can't say I've ever heard of the Ricky007 University of Metrosexual Hairdressing. They certainly are not a Regis Certified Training School. This is a glamourous profession, and unfortunately there are too many shady people who are all too willing to take advantage of youngsters and newbies. I would recommend that you visit the RegisCorp website for introductory information on schools and courses. If you wish, you may contact me privately and I may be able to locate some options that are in your area.

Also, I have no idea who Cathy_FL is. Sorry. Remember always to do your due diligence. There are a lot of scams and shady people out there.

It's in the books!

Well I'm sure everyone is still glowing from the HAL (1). I know. I know. I promised I'd be working on HAL (2) as soon as the first one concluded, but excuse me if I take some moments to catch my breath.

Are there any words that adequately capture the whole HAL weekend? I don't know. How about amazing, terrific, stupendous, magical, all of the above and more?! It was truly awesome. Thank you everybody for making it so wonderful. I think we can all agree it was great, and all 75 attendees have already said they will definitely attend HAL (2) no matter where or when it is. How about that?

Oh yeah, ok, let me end the suspense. Who was our mystery guest?

It was none other than former First Lady Barbara Bush!!! Omigod, yes!

Yes, she is actually holding the HAL booklet I put together, and she autographed everybody's. I'll treasure mine forever. She's an amazing woman who gave a truly inspiring speech.

She hung out with us for the last 6 hours that Sunday, even helping us collapse the tables and fold the chairs. What a woman!

Former First Lady Barbara Bush was also a big winner in the door prizes and raffles, winning the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, a Princess Cruise Lines trip for 2 from Mexico to Alaska, and an autographed football by the entire 1967 Green Bay Packers that retails for $108,000.

To commemorate our visit from Mrs Bush, Wally's Wig World of Orlando created a very special Barbara Bush wig. I saw more than a few of the attendees redeem their free wig coupon for it. It'll probably be one of the most popular wig styles of all time, and rightfully so, because it's as beautiful and true to life as the woman who inspired it.

I don't want to make any promises, but Mrs Bush confided in me that she had such a blast, that she definitely wants to be a part of HAL (2). She says she's an avid reader of this blog! We've exchanged email addresses, and she said as soon as I finalize everything for HAL (2), I must (her emphasis) email the details and the door prize list to her immediately. I will, I will. I promise, Mrs Bush!

Everything's tentative, but HAL (2) will definitely be held in a larger venue. We seek to accomodate 400-500 attendees. It's going to be quite a challenge to myself and the gals of the HAL Council to outdo HAL (1), but I think we're up to it. ;) Thanks again, gals!

Wish you were here!

Oh gosh are we having a fantastic time this weekend. The first ever Florida Hair-A-Long is a certified success. I guaranteed it, didn't I? <gg>

We are still extraordinarily busy here, so I don't have much time to blog right now. Enjoy the group photo we took last night before heading out with our families to the Outback Steakhouse. We jammed that place shut last night. I think they had to kill 500 cows for our group alone. Moo!

I would be remiss if I didn't wish a Happy Father's Day to all the men out there. I was pleasently surprised to see four men in our group of attendees! All of them are fathers too. Happy Father's Day, gentlemen.

As I promised, we do have a special guest, and "she" is set to appear any moment now. Everyone here is on pins and needles. Only a handful of us know who this person is. I won't spill the beans on line. Not yet, at least. It's not fair that you at home know before the attendees, right?

Everyone is starting to come back into the ballroom from the lunch buffet, so I have to go. Did I mention how delish the food is here? Just splendid. I'm so happy the way things have turned out.

Goodbye all! More photos to come!

Busy Busy!

Sorry I've been out of touch for a few weeks. I've been busy preparing for the Florida HAL (1). Lordy, I had no idea how much work went into such an enterprise. Thanks to all my new friends, the self anointed HAL Council, for their help as well. They've been indispensible, and as a result of everyone's cooperative spirit and hard work, I feel I can justly guarantee that this event will be a success.

As a super secret bonus (I said it's a secret! So keep it on the down low, k?), I'm lining up a very special guest. This person will only be present for one day (hopefully the whole day), and give a little speech, answer your questions if you have any, and even sign autographs (yes, this person is that famous!).

Sorry for all the secrets, <ggg>. I know that's not fair, but it'll all be worth it. I promise!

I hope I've whet your HAL appetites. The date is getting closer and closer, and I'm getting more frazzled. You should see my hair! <ggggg>

OK folks, that's all for now.

Sold out!

Well, that didn't take long. We sold out the 2005 Florida Hair-A-Long in 14 minutes! Please stop jamming the hotel's phonelines and e-mailbox. We are SOLD OUT!

I'm afraid I drastically underestimated the popularity and need for such an event. This is the first one ever that I've organized and I wanted to err on the side of caution. Well, I erred. Boy did I ever!

Fret not, if you've been shut out. The first thing I'll be doing after we wrap up with the Florida HAL 1 will be to start immediately on preparing on HAL 2. I already have a handful of volunteers who want to help me out, and that's going to be great. We do need a "committee" for these sorts of things. Anything larger than the present one right now is way beyond my scope alone.

***FLORIDA HAIR-A-LONG***

Sorry for the short notice, but I'm pleased to announce that the plans for the first ever Florida Hair-A-Long have been finalized!

I have reserved a block of 25 rooms at the Orlando Howard Johnson's for the weekend of June 18-19th. Really now. What's so darned funny? If I were to tell you the physical structure of each strand of hair on our bodies is just as complicated as the structure of a tooth (and 10 times as complicated as a simple organ like the human heart), would you still be laughing?

Becoming a certifield Regis Professional is just as difficult as becoming an oral surgeon or heart doctor. The public perception is grossly different.

Why?

I'd say a lot of it is sexism. Women make up the majority of hair care professionals. Of course, if you were name any famous hair professionals, you'd could rattle off a dozen men who work in Beverly Hills, NYC and Paris. It's just like with women in the kitchen. Every woman is a cook, but you start thinking about chefs, and you can only think of men. That's life.

Secondly, hair care is such a prevalent part of our daily lives, that unfortunately, most people think they can handle it just fine on their own with your basic assortment of combs, brushes, off the shelf mass produced products and a hair dryer. Is it any wonder that everyone we see has ridiculous hair? None of us would replace a filling by ourselves or staple up a burst aorta, but people still persist in disasterous hair maneuvers each and everyday like "evening out their bangs, adding highlights for the summer with bleach and q-tips, etc."

Lastly, hair care deals with glamour. As professionals, we are supposed to take a backseat to our clients. They are the superstars, each and everyone of them, famous or not. We have to take our place in the background and a professional does so willingly. When these stars walk the red carpet they'll acknowledge the dress designer, the jewelry designer, the shoe designer, etc. Does Joan Collins ever ask "who did your wonderful hair?" 'Nuff said.

Tax Day

It's Tax Day, and I'm proud to say I've paid more in Federal taxes (I don't pay state tax in Florida) than ever before. I am a hair care professional and I get paid like any other professional. I get top dollar for delivering top work.

It wasn't always like this, but I discovered early on from my Regis training, that in order to be the best, you need to have the mindset of the best. So they drill that into you from the beginning. The mental part of this game is as important as anything.

I'd love to give a lecture on the mental aspect of hairdressing at our upcoming Florida Hair-A-Long. I'm sure it's a drastically untapped aspect of our profession. You have to understand, we are taught this over a years long process at Regis. Can I replicate this for you in a 1 or 2 hour seminar? I don't know. It's so ingrained into my psyche now, I wear my confidence like it's my apron and think nothing of it any longer. But as a beginner, you will have to consciously work on it with affirmations and painstaking exercises that really make you take a good look at your true self, warts and all. I will work on crystallizing everything, and maybe put together an exercise book to hand out to all attendees. I think if I can break everything down into simplistic step, we can start to make breakthroughs at the first Hair-A-Long and then follow-thru online here at my blog or even possibly with chat sessions.

Regis Corp

I work for Regis. Why Regis? Because Regis is the best in the world for hair care. I always figure, to be the best, you have to be with the best.

I've worked in Regis Salons, freelanced on my own and most recently even worked in Wal-mart superstores (do you know how commissions those ladies make?).

My experiences haven't really differed too much place to place, time to time. I've worked in Beverly Hills and Park Place on celebrity hair like Kelly Ripa and Lauren Holly, and I've worked on Jane Doe's hair in the extras movie trailer, and I've worked on Plain Jane's hair in Wal-mart. Each head I serve is the same to me, really. That's how much I care. That's how much all Regis professionals care. It's that work ethic instilled into us that, I feel, sets us apart from everyone else. I'm proud to be on the Regis team. They are like the New York Yankees and they make each of us feel like Babe Ruth. It's very special.

Your hair defines you

As we near Presidents Day, I got to thinking about the Father of our Country, Mr George Washington. We've all seen the same frozen portraits of this great man. Have you ever seen such a stiff? I'm sure we all get that impression seeing him. He looks less dignified as he does just plain uncomfortable. I'm sure most of you would say it's his wooden teeth.

For me, I also center in on that powdered beaver pelt on his head. That must've felt like wearing a floppy just cooked pork chop, especially during the humid summers of the East Coast. Why did our forefathers resort to such stupidity?

Why couldn't they let their hair down?

Well one guy of those times who did just that was my man, Benjamin Franklin. Now if I remember my US History lessons right, here was a man who knew how to have a good time!

Ben Franklin was what they call a Renaissance Man. I'm not even sure what that means, but if that means being an individual and always pushing the envelope, then that's surely something we should all aspire towards.

All too often today, some goofy kid will come to me and ask for cornrows. A decade ago it was a "fade." Before that it was "I want a Farrah" and so on. Why do you want that, I'll always ask. How do they respond? Because that's what my friends have. Does it look good, I'll ask. Yes, it's awesome!

Of course, nothing changes. Our friends always look awesome, and we've got to look just like them. Pushing the envelope means sticking out and not looking like everyone else, which is probably the most frightening thought for everyone. So society is just the blind leading the blind and conformity is the key. Is this too deep? OK, I'll stop.

Who is your Hair Hero?

I've always been infatuated with Cher. What a wonderful woman and entertainer. And her hair! Is there any other personality you can name who has been so closely associated with hair and making it a part of her persona?

She was really the card on the old Sonny & Cher television show. Her costumes and wigs were legendary. She really made me think how our hair defines us. It was amazing to see her whole personality change from hairstyle to hairstyle.

In reality, I've heard she's really shy, introverted and insecure. I guess it's not an exaggeration to say she draws her power from her hair. It's as true as it is from the old tale of Samson and his locks.

Another perform I just love is Dolly Parton. She's pure joy and she's just soooo out there, if you know what I mean! <g> She wears big poofy wigs too. Maybe the same exactly kind French courtiers wore all powdered up in the 16th or 17th century. But if you've ever seen a Cher show (and I've seen a dozen in person), you know Cher has more hair changes in half an hour than Dolly has had in 4 decades. That's just their different personalities. I love both. Dolly is consistent, and Cher is wild. For a normal person like us, I guess we have to shoot for somewhere in between.

Tell me.

Who's your hair hero? I guess I'm dating myself severely by mentioning Cher and Dolly Parton. Not very cool, I'm sure. <gg>

How many different hairstyles have you had in the past calendar year? Do you change it on a whim like the wind? Or are you predictable and never changing?

Tell me. Tell me.

This is the dawning...

If you're of my generation, maybe your first real deep thoughts of hair came with the release of the smash musical, Hair, over 35 years ago. Are we really that old?

Back then, the only alternatives for the "hip" youth generation was either to "let it down" (and boy, did we ever) or to get an afro (a la Jimi Hendrix Experience). I actually did get an afro for a year, but usually I just let it down to the middle of my back.

Do you have hair memories of those days? Looking back at the old photos can be awfully embarrassing. My kids are always saying, "Holy Canoli, Mom! You were such a goofball!" I can't argue with them. Privately, I still think I was pretty groovy and cool, but the times change and people's hairstyles do get dated.

I would say my hair philosophy is heavily rooted in trying to attain a timeless look. One that never dates. Is it possible? I believe so. It's a huge project, though, and the more input I get from fellow hair professionals, the more precise look I can achieve.

This is where you come in. Let's really get this Hair-A-Long off the ground. I'm really excited about it. Let's make this dream a reality!

Hair is my life

Have you any idea how much money people spend on their hair every year? It's staggering. People buy combs, brushes, picks, shampoos, conditioners, rinses, vitamin rubs, soothers, smoothers, fritzers, volumizers, tamers, boosters, and texturizers. They buy in gels, creams, oils and sprays. Well, you get the idea. I could go on and on.

This is a trillion dollar business. Do you know anybody who doesn't care about their hair? Even bald people fret about their 50 strand combovers.

Proper hair care is a science. It should be performed only by skilled and licensed professionals. Would you trust your dental implants or your heart surgery to an amateur? Of course not. Your hair care is no less important, and unfortunately there are untold millions of tragic hair stories out there everyday.

Let's make a resolution in 2005 to treat ourselves right. The top of the list starts with the top of our heads. No more hair abuse! No more hair abuse! Say it loud! Say it proud! No more hair abuse!

I am currently living in Florida, and I would love to meet with fellow hair care professionals and hair aficionados in the area. Perhaps we can arrange for a 2 or 3 day Florida Hair-A-Long in this upcoming year. Let's resolve to do it, shall we?
